#200: Mindset Matters with Terri Lance – Committing to Keto

2
August 20, 2021

Are you ready to take your Keto vows?! Have you made a commitment to yourself and your health that you can stick to or do you need to tweak the parameters a little?

This week Terri and Daisy chat about what it takes to really commit to Keto and how cheating on Keto is really just cheating on yourself.

Terri has been keto for over 3 years and Paleo for 2 before that. She struggled with being overweight or obese from age of 7 until about 5 years ago and tried all types of weight loss plans and diets throughout most of her adult life.

Diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in her early 30s, Terri was prescribed many medications, typically taking three for diabetes, a statin and an ace inhibitor. She no longer takes any prescriptions and no longer has any biomarkers of Type 2 diabetes.

Terri was a middle school English teacher at the start of her career; then went back to grad school and earned her PhD in Counseling Psychology. She was then a psychologist in private practice for over thirteen years.

Terri is now a coach with IDM’s The Fasting Method. She is the Director of Retreat Development and has hosted two fasting retreats in Hawaii.

#197: Eranda Wickramasinghe – Putting T2D Into Remission With Simple and Manageable Lifestyle Changes

July 30, 2021

Daisy’s latest extraordinary man, Eranda Wickramasinghe, talks about how he put his prediabetic status into remission and now helps others to do the same as an Ambassador for the PHC in the UK.

He describes himself as a “passionate patient advocate for anyone suffering from type 2 diabetes, prediabetes or obesity” and is part of a pilot scheme in the UK that is having a really positive impact.

As the Harpenden Ambassador for the UK charity, The Public Health Collaboration, Eranda is a passionate patient advocate for anyone suffering from type 2 diabetes, prediabetes or obesity. In his own words:

‘It’s possible to reverse* (*technical term is remission) these through simple and manageable lifestyle changes, to feel happier and healthier, and to live a life of abundance.

It starts with hope, the simple idea that “things can get better for me and there is a realistic way for me to feel happier and healthier”. Hope combined with support opens up a world of possibilities. It doesn’t take superhuman effort or willpower, it just takes the willingness to believe things can get better and to take small steps to make it so, with support every step of the way.

I’m also the proud dad of a wonderful little boy, and the luckiest husband in the world with the most brilliant, beautiful and supportive wife I could hope for – grateful every day for the life and love I have.’

#196: Mindset Matters with Terri Lance – Making Keto Part of Your Identity

4
July 23, 2021

We’ve all heard that phrase, “Keto needs to be a lifestyle not a diet”. Well what does that really entail and how can you make it happen?

In the first of the new Mindset Matters episodes, Terri talks about how to really get to grips with making Keto or Low Carb (or any dietary change for that matter) part of your identity and how we can learn from the Vegan community.

#194: Kim Howerton – Reverse Dieting

July 9, 2021

This week’s extraordinary woman is Kim Howerton. Kim talks about how eating too little for too long can be a real problem for some people on Keto when they are experiencing weight loss stalls and how reverse dieting could be the answer.

Kim Howerton struggled with her relationship with food from the time she was 8. As the years went by and her health problems mounted, she felt at the mercy of her body and out of control with her weight. A dedicated seeker of pleasure, she realised that life in a body that was always in pain was no way to live; that a pleasurable life starts by living in a body that feels good.

Enter Keto – a life that has brought together her love of satisfying, delicious foods in a way that makes her actually feel good. She now shares her love of all things Keto by creating recipes, running a Facebook group and her podcast Keto Life Support.

#178: Kelly LeBlanc – Going Beyond Keto to Find Help for Chronic Pain

March 12, 2021

Daisy’s latest extraordinary woman, Kelly, talks about how she discovered that dealing with her past and past trauma was key to unlocking her health issues in the present. This is the second episode where Kelly digs deeper into what is behind her struggles with chronic pain and periods of stress and anxiety.

Listen to the first part of Kelly’s story here:

#177: Kelly LeBlanc – Finding Keto After Too Many Shake Diets!

I rewrote Kelly’s bio for the podcast intro but am leaving it as written for the show notes. So, in Kelly’s words…

I am 47 years old. I grew up in a small French community on the east coast of Canada called Cheticamp. It’s a small, idyllic place on the Cabot Trail. Look it up. Visit if you can. I don’t think I ever would have left if there had been as work in my chosen field. But reality hit midway through my second degree and I ended up moving to the US in 1996, after being recruited by a consulting company to work on Y2K projects.

The various projects I worked on, all over the US and even Mexico, combined with my education, finally led me to Pfizer in Connecticut, where I met my husband of 22 years. Mike loves to tell the story of how I seduced him. And it is true. I did. He was taking way too long to make any kind of move and I had to decide if I was staying in the US or moving back to Canada within about 2 months of meeting him. Desperate times require creative measures. He says it was good for his ego. I say it was good for my sanity. He is the most amazing partner. No kids. By choice. But we do have 2 beautiful feline boys. We rescue cats with special needs as they tend to linger a long time in shelters. Regardless of how loving they are.

Currently we are living in the Austin, TX area, where we are learning to live without seasons (it’s always hot) and allergies. The conveniences make up for it. And the opportunities are amazing. I currently work as a DevOps manager and manage a small team of 3 and we are responsible for managing 50+ applications with a focus on creating high performance teams.

I have had weight challenges my entire life and I tried everything. Losing weight was always easy, but maintenance, Oof! (That’s the sound of the wind being knocked out of my lungs). Sometimes more successful than others. I always knew the reason I didn’t have long lasting success was that I didn’t have my mind in the right space. But waiting to be in the right mental space was often not an option. As stubborn and determined as I am, I always ended up regaining. Even when I thought I was dealing with all the things that needed to be dealt with.

Recently, thanks to Kelly Canueto’s story, I realized that I had not actually been dealing with my past and my past trauma. I had acknowledged its existence, but I hadn’t worked through it. Not really. It was still a heavy weight, literally on my shoulders and chest. With my eyes open I had no choice. I had to do the work. And here I am now. At the beginning of my journey, again. And so much further along, in such a short period of time, than I ever thought was possible.

Because of how Kelly’s episode affected me, I really felt it was time to share my experiences as well.
